What is World Social Media Day?
World Social Media Day – of course.
It’s today, June 30.
World Social Media Day was created and launched in 2010 by Mashable, the digital media and news platform, as a way “to recognize social media’s impact on global communication and to bring the world together to celebrate it.”
For those of you keeping score at home, here is a brief social media history recap, found on Nationaltoday.com:
Sixdegrees was the first social media platform ever to be launched 1997. The website, which had over a million users when it shut down in 2001, allowed users to list friends and family members and had features such as profiles, bulletin boards and school affiliations.
Friendster came along in 2002, allowing more than 100 million people, most of whom are in Asia, to safely make new friends.
MySpace and Facebook were both launched in 2004. YouTube and Twitter followed in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
Instagram launched in 2010 and within the first couple months had more than a million users.
Snapchat came to life in 2011 and TikTok in 2016.
As Justin noted recently, BeReal is the newest social media platform in which users show themselves and their lives in an authentic way at a random time each day.
You can bet these are just the early history of where social media is headed.
