What Disney World Taught Me About Public Relations
Earlier this month, in part to show off some of my family vacation photos, I wrote a blog post sharing some great PR lessons that could be learned from the attractions at Universal Orlando.
It is only fitting then that I also share some learnings from the rides at Disney World (and share this amazing photo from one of our day’s adventures).
Here we go!
It’s a Small World
I say this at least twice a week. The communications world is small, so be sure to make real relationships and tend to them both with media and colleagues.
Mad Tea Party
For those who don’t know, these are the spinning teacups. PR, especially on the agency side, can be a dizzyingly fast-paced ride. Be prepared to strap in some days.
Star Wars Rise of the Resistance
Holy visual extravaganza, and what a backstory for a ride, right? From those dozens of storm troopers waiting for guests to the hero’s journey riders take part in for 120 seconds, it is a wow on every level. And there are two lessons here. First, visuals matter. Make sure you are investing in good ones. In addition, story telling is important. You must be able to craft a compelling story.
Toy Story Mania
Always seek engagement. It not only increases message retention, it creates public relationships and media relationships, which are always the goal.
Expedition Everest
While I hate to give away spoilers, during this roller coaster, the ride hurdles toward a “broken track” and surprises guests by shooting them backwards to get back “home” safely. What an allegory for crisis and issues management, right?
