#TipForTuesday – What is Leadership?
What with vacation and busy travel in the month of July, I did not post as I committed to do on the second Tuesday of each month. But I’m back at it today and I’ll do four cards instead of three from the Developing the Leader Within You deck. Previous posts can be viewed here.
This month’s selections are:
- Money/Wealth – an abundance of valuable material possessions, riches
- Faith/Religion – belief in a higher power
- Effectiveness – executing with precision to achieve results
- Commitment – being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action, dedication
According to John Maxwell, who is the developer of this leadership deck of cards, leadership is dying. He says that our world is full of people who have ideas and agendas, but it lacks genuine leadership. Twenty-five years ago, leadership was defined as having a position; today, leadership is defined as a voice. Neither definition is complete.
Do the four concepts above complete the definition? Do any of the other selections I’ve written about actually complete the definition?
I believe leadership is ever-evolving. Those in leadership positions (whether by choice or by circumstances) are called upon to use a variety of different skills, characteristics and life experiences to guide them.
Do we lack genuine leadership? No, I don’t think so. What we might lack, or perhaps it is better to say what we might need, is the commitment to a course of action that ensures our effectiveness is achieving the intended results.
