The PR and Pickleball Connection
Pickleball participation has grown by an astounding average of 223.5% over the last three years, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. Pickleball, which is played with a paddle and combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, can be played with two or four players and can be modified to create a fast or slow-paced game, depending on your preference.
At a recent Phoenix PRSA event, I was able to pick up the paddle for the first time in a while to receive some instruction, practice my skills and hit with fellow communications professionals. While I am more used to tennis, it was great to refresh my memory and engage with a sport that is becoming a phenomenon.
I also made the connection that much like pickleball players adapt their style to suit their strengths while remaining focused on charging to the net for a better chance to finish off the point, we in public relations develop and adapt our strategies to remain flexible while staying committed to achieving a clear goal.
The growing popularity of pickleball has inspired businesses to create dedicated spaces for enthusiasts to play and socialize, making physical activity enjoyable. This trend highlights an essential lesson for businesses: there’s always a niche waiting to be filled. Whether it’s finding a unique angle for a story or identifying an untapped audience, public relations opportunities are vast for your business or new ideas if you’re willing to explore them.
As pickleball continues to lift off the ground, consider how a fun activity could make the next great client, networking, or fun get together event. For PR practitioners, the rise of pickleball presents a unique opportunity to engage with this growing community. Consider sponsoring a local tournament or hosting a pickleball-themed event to connect with clients and partners. These events encourage engagement and promote your brand while having fun
