The PR behind #hashtags 10th Birthday
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love using #hashtags (In fact I was once named the #HashtagQueen by Kelly Potts – see the proof here)! But in 2015, Patrick Coffee via AdWeek actually wrote a blog post titled “No One Uses #Hashtags Anymore” in which I responded with my blog post, “Everyone STILL Uses #Hashtags.”
I am happy to announce that today is the 10th anniversary of the #hashtag which means that people still use #hashtags (a lot)! In fact BBC News wrote an article today that said the #hashtag symbol “is used 125 million times on the platform each day.” The same BBC News article listed the 10 most popular hashtags from the last 10 years which include: #barcamp, #BlackLivesMatter, #CupforBen, #EdBallsDay, #FollowFriday, #HeForShe, #IceBucketChallenge, #JoinIn, #PutYourBatsOut and #TheDress
While those seem like pretty popular #hashtags that have been used these are a few of my favorites (some are still the same from my blog post in 2014):
- #CoffeeIsGood (But in truth it is tied with #Chocolate)
- #got or #gameofthrones (Because does a better show exist?)
- #KSProblems (Because it really is bad when you have them #Literally)
- #PocketsAreTheNewBlack (#MoveoverKateSpade – I am making my move)
- #TeamSwift (Because who doesn’t love TS?)
- #ProudMommyMoment (Because being a mom is what I love to do)
- #TennisLife / #Tennis (Because it is what I love do)
- #PublicRelations (Because again… it is also what love I do)
- #IGot99ProblemsButPRaintOne (See above)
- #Yolo (Because you literally do)
