In this social media crazed world, it seems that #hashtags are a normal part of our everyday lives. So imagine my surprise, shock and laughter when I received a text from my mom that read “Explain the hash tag (sic) to me please”.
After the shock subsided – and laughter with one of my friends who found it just as hilarious as I did – I called my mom and proceeded to explain to her what a hashtag was and how it was used.
Later that day, Rachel (the hashtag queen) and I were talking about hashtags and how we use them in our everyday conversations, tweets and texts.
As we were talking about this, she mentioned that her Aunt asked her the same question a few months ago. Of course, Rachel had the perfect response to her Aunt:
A hashtag is an easy way to tag items that are important and make them searchable. The “official” use of a hashtag is for people to have the ability to search for trending topics or topics that may be important to them. I like to use hashtags for fun or to make a point. They can be used on multiple social media platforms and should be used but not abused.
An example of a topic that one might be interested in this month is #Movember! Just type this into the search bar in either Facebook or Twitter and you will see what people are saying about #Movember.
So, what would you say if you were asked? What is a #hashtag?
