How I define Public Relations:
To me, it’s all about building relationships; especially between the client and the public. The most important piece is helping clients tell their story in a memorable and effective way that the community can connect with.
Hat you most identify with:
The hat I most identify with is my tried-and-true beanie. To me, it represents a cozy winter day bundled up in Flagstaff, where I went to school at Northern Arizona University. My experience living there shaped me into the person I am today and helped my desert roots discover a newfound love of snow!
I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona to parents who instilled in me the mentality that the smartest people know a little bit about everything.
Education was a strong force in my childhood: every summer involved some form of tutoring, from math camp to writing workshops in a local author’s basement. Education even followed us on vacation, where we always visited the local college campus of any city we found ourselves in.
Going to college was always in the plan for me, but when the time came to start applying I found myself lost in a sea of my peers who already knew exactly what they wanted to do, from being nurses to police officers. But what did I want to do? I spent months trying to make a decision.
The only tricky part… I wanted to do everything.
College came and I spent my first year undeclared, taking every class I could get my hands on. From biology to anthropology, I tried to narrow down my interests but ended up captivated by every subject I took.
Finally came the time for me to make up my mind … and I was terrified. I still wanted to spend my life learning about everything and challenging myself, but how could I find all that in one career?
I was lost, so I took to NAU’s list of majors. I spent hours reading and stumbled across a new major in the School of Communication: Strategic Communication, where I could have an emphasis in public relations. I decided to give it a shot.
One day into my first class and I was in love. I put my head down and worked hard, graduating cum laude and a semester early. This journey has brought me to roles with Dignity Health, a healthcare corporation; OH Partners, the largest advertising agency in Phoenix, according to the Phoenix Business Journal; and OH Predictive Insights, a political polling and research firm. Now I move on to my next chapter at HMA Public Relations as an account coordinator, working among some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry.
Public relations sparked a passion that has allowed me to dip my toes into countless interests and work with all kinds of clients, continuing my lifelong goal to know a little about everything. I don’t know what the future holds, but I know that every step of the way I will continue learning a little bit about something.
After all, what would my parents think if I didn’t?
