#MediaMonday – Robbie Reynold

Today’s #MediaMonday feature comes to us from Robbie Reynold, an anchor and reporter at KVOA in Tucson. Robbie recently joined us PR folks for a virtual panel with PRSA Southern Arizona Chapter, where he shared what day-to-day life is like in the newsroom and offered tips on the best ways to get our stories on air.

Take it away, Robbie!

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Granite Bay, California. It’s a small suburb just outside of Sacramento.

How did you get your start in media/broadcasting? Tell us your story and experience.

I started out as a sports reporter for one of my local newspapers, the Roseville Press Tribune, after I finished high school. Once I started college at UC Davis, I started an internship at KCRA, the NBC affiliate in Sacramento. Once I graduated, I started working as a news producer for KTXL, the FOX affiliate in Sacramento.

What types of stories are you looking for?

I’ve always believed interesting people make interesting stories. Stories that are told from the perspective of local people are the best ones. So, when I read press releases or get a tip from a viewer, I’m always thinking about who that story impacts and how I can get that perspective. I cover a very wide range of topics: health, education, military, crime, government, safety, sports, and everything in between!

What are your favorite stories to work on? Any favorite past stories you want to share?

My favorite stories to work on are breaking news and major stories. I really like the thrill of exciting stories that have a big impact on many people. I’ve covered floods, hurricanes, mass shootings, court trials, and elections. But when it comes to more human-interest stories, I honestly like anything with someone who has a good story to tell!

Best advice for PR people pitching you?

Think about the elements of your story. Television journalists need people to interview, something to get video of, possibly pictures of something that happened before that applies to your story, or previously recorded video. You can have a very interesting story, but with weak sound or visuals it doesn’t catch the attention of a viewer. Having these elements in place before you meet with a reporter benefits both parties.

What are some of your hobbies?

I am an endurance athlete who regularly competes in triathlons and cross-country ski races. I also enjoy tennis, golf, martial arts, reading history, playing piano and guitar, cooking, and traveling to mountainous areas like Central Europe, South America, and New Zealand.

Do you have any favorite local spots?

I really enjoy all the local trails here like Sweetwater and Fantasy Island. Mount Lemmon is always a great trip. I go to Flagstaff a lot for ski trips or mountain biking. My favorite restaurants are Guadalajara Grill, BOCA Tacos, and Fatman Kitchen.
