#MediaMonday – Mallory Gleich

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from the new editor of Arcadia News, Mallory Gleich.
Tell us how you got your start in journalism? I’ve been writing in journals since I was able to form a word, and when I started high school, I knew I wanted to be a writer of some sort. I wasn’t too interested in the breaking news stories, or being on camera, so when I started classes at ASU’s Cronkite School, I was a little intimidated. I’ve always been one to correct my friends’ grammar (which they love me for, of course) so farther into my college career, I decided that editing was my ultimate goal.
And how did you make your way to Arcadia News? I started writing for Arcadia as an assignment for one of my classes at Cronkite years ago. We had to get six stories published for a print publication in order to pass the class, so I reached out to the editor here at the time. When the semester ended, I was offered a freelance position and I have been writing for Arcadia ever since.
Tell us about what we can expect from Arcadia News in 2019. Our primary focus is the people, neighborhood stories and businesses that keep Arcadia thriving! Arcadia Home & Design will be brought back by popular demand. Publication dates to be announced.
Where did you grow up? I was born in Mesa and grew up on the Phoenix/Scottsdale border. I also lived in a small town in Minnesota for a time, which was entirely different from the hustle of the city! Things are a lot quieter – and colder – up there.
Favorite type of music? Oh man, I am all over the place when it comes to music! My favorite artist is Michael Jackson, so that would be the short answer I suppose? This morning I listened to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, followed by the Mary Poppins Returns soundtrack, Twenty One Pilots and then the classic rock station. I like a little variety.
Favorite color? Green.
Favorite places to visit? I love going to Minnesota to visit my mom and other family that live up there. It’s always a blast when we get together. Now that I think about it, I haven’t traveled too far from home yet, but I have a few places on the bucket list!
What are some of your favorite local spots or things to do? I live in North Scottsdale, so I haven’t tried too many places in Arcadia yet, but I love how many choices there are in this area for places to eat. I’ve started making a list of all the places I need to try out and I always welcome suggestions when it comes to food and things to do!
Favorite foods or restaurants? I’m not a picky eater by any means, so I’ll pretty much try anything. I do have an affinity for macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs, shrimp and anything breakfast related. It’s a weird list, I know.
Least favorite food?  Tapioca pudding. Those little bead things, just…no.
Three things readers would be surprised to know about you? I am obsessed with baby names and wedding dresses. I love food but I hate cooking and I also severely dislike driving.
What should people be pitching you?  Anything and everything Arcadia! New restaurants or businesses, interesting bits of history, events in the area, neighborhood interests, stuff like that.
What is the lead time you need for content? Four to six weeks.
What is the best way to reach you? Email me! Editor@arcadianews.com.
