#MediaMonday – Kenzie Barrena
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Kenzie Barrena, a senior writer for Fabulous Media Group, which includes six lifestyle and news websites in Fabulous Arizona, Fabulous Wisconsin, Fabulous Washington, Fabulous Nevada, Fabulous California, and Fabulous Iowa.
Kenzie, time to share!
How did you get your start in the media? What is your story?
My journey in the media industry began with several editorial internships at various publications, such as Arizona Foothills Magazine, OnScotttsdale, and AZ Food and Wine. During my tenure at Arizona Foothills Magazine, I had the opportunity to work with Melissa Larsen, who is currently the editor-in-chief at Fabulous Media Group. Through this connection, I was introduced to Cynthia Sassi, the founder and owner of Fabulous, and in 2020, I became a part of the team. Since joining Fabulous Media Group, I have flourished with the support of our remarkable team and now hold the position of a senior writer for the publication. I am passionate about my work, and I embrace each day as an opportunity to continue to grow.
Tell us about your beat for Fabulous Media Group, including the pitches you want and from which regions?
I enjoy all facets of lifestyle writing—from covering topics including restaurants and vineyards to luxe travel and beauty-focused features. Though I welcome all pitches, I do have a soft spot for wineries, spas and immersive tasting experiences. Fabulous Media Group covers six states across the U.S., including Arizona, Wisconsin, Washington, Nevada, California and Iowa and I welcome pitches for each region.
Where did you grow up?
Phoenix
Favorite color?
Eucalyptus green
Favorite TV shows or movies?
I am a huge consumer of television and movies. My all-time favorite movie is “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” but other honorable mentions include “Crimson Peak,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Django Unchained.” As for TV shows, “BoJack Horseman” takes the cake for number one.
Favorite restaurants or other haunts?
I spend an absurd amount of time (and money) at local coffee shops, with Futuro as my current favorite. When it comes to restaurants, Pizzicletta, and Pizzeria Bianco hold a special place in my heart, although Rosso Italian is proving to be a formidable contender. I am also a die-hard fan of Merkin Vineyards Tasting Room & Osteria (and every other winery in the collection).
Three things readers would be surprised to know about you?
I train in Krav Maga weekly, my favorite holiday is Christmas, and I am related to Lynda Carter and the owners of Hershey.
