#MediaMonday – Craig Fouhy
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from ABC15 Sports Director Craig Fouhy. He’s a three-time Emmy Award winner who has been at the station for nearly 25 years!
Craig, time to share:
I graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., majoring in education, with minors in political science, history, and coaching. I played college football at PLU and was a two-time unanimous choice All-Conference offensive tackle, Little All-Coast two years, two years All-District and an Honorable Mention All-American my senior year.
I got into coaching right out of college and started as the head coach at Lake Roosevelt High School in Coulee Dam, Wash. I was the running backs coach at the University of Montana and the head coach at North Park College in Chicago, where we ran the “spread, no huddle offense.” I was also on the first coaching staff at Hamilton High School in Chandler when it opened.
I had never thought about a career in broadcasting, but after moving to the Valley and close to two decades of coaching, I thought I’d give it a try when the opportunity presented itself.
I took a paper resume in to ABC15 and asked to meet with the HR representative. I got a call back from them and the general manager at the time, Brad Nielson, who gave me a shot and coined the phrase “Fouhy on Sports.” So after spending 18 years coaching college and high school football, I joined ABC15 in 1998.
During my time at ABC15 I have served as a morning news anchor, co-host of our popular morning show Sonoran Living, host of our Sunday Night sports show “Sports Sunday,” our Cardinals show, “Monday Night Live,” and have hosted DIY segments for our parent company, E.W. Scripps.
I have covered six Super Bowls now and they never get old, the NBA Finals, a couple of College Football National Championships, the NHL Playoffs, and of course, covered all seven games of the 2001 World Series.
What I like best about my job is being able to give our viewers a unique coach’s perspective on the world of sports. I appreciate being known for my honesty and I am not afraid to share my opinion during the popular “Fouhy on Sports” and “In The Ring” segments.
I also enjoy spotlighting our youngest and brightest in the “Fouhy’s Small Stars” segments, one of our most popular and longest-running segments here at ABC15.
In addition to television and coaching, I have also been a play-by-play announcer and color commentator for college football television and radio, as well as a public-address announcer for several professional, college and high school sports teams across the country.
A little known fact about me: In the summer of 1978, I played guitar and sang in nightclubs and restaurants on Maui, Hawaii.
When I’m not working, I love to spend time with my family. My wife Kimb and I live in the East Valley and enjoy getting involved with the community.
