#MediaMonday – Cheyanne Mumphrey
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from The Associated Press, where Cheyanne Mumphrey is a news editor in Phoenix. She’s also a fellow Lumberjack and two-time graduate.
Cheyanne, time to share:
My name is Cheyanne Mumphrey and I’m an editor at The Associated Press in Phoenix. I’m originally from Southern California and came to Arizona in 2013 after being recruited to play soccer at Northern Arizona University. I played for two years at the Division I level, including on the team that won the 2014 Big Sky Conference championship.
I got my start in journalism working for The Lumberjack newspaper, NAZToday, KJACK Radio and the NAU athletics department. I chose journalism because I enjoyed writing, learning and making an impact. I was originally studying to become an international investment banker. Now, I edit stories from my AP colleagues in the Western U.S. I also occasionally report, shoot photos and contribute to the company’s efforts in diversity and digital innovation.
Outside of work, I love being outdoors with my English Cocker Spaniel puppy, Ryder, and my boyfriend, Stayson Isobe. I also enjoy drawing and crafting. More recently, I’ve been working on two children’s books.
You can reach me at cmumphrey@ap.org or on Twitter at @cheymumph. I enjoy helping early career journalists consider their path in the industry and provide advice. I often also speak with high school and college classes about professionalism, social media and my experiences so far in the journalism sphere. Happy to chat!
