#MediaMonday – Amanda Herrera

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Amanda Herrera, segment producer for AZ Family’s Good Morning Arizona.

How did you get your start in the media?

You could say my love for media and television started at a young age. It seemed like Univision was on in my household from the moment we woke up to the moment we fell asleep. My personal favorite from the network was its morning show, Despierta America. The show felt like home for me, and I imagine to my parents as well. Inspired, I attended the University of Miami, earning degrees in Broadcast Journalism & Political Science. Before joining Arizona’s Family, I had an internship at NPR in Washington and worked in Fort Myers in Florida. And now here I am!

Tell us about your outlet and types of story pitches you want?

Good Morning Arizona is focused on bringing what’s going on across the Valley right into our viewers’ homes. We’re interested in feature stories/cool things to do around Arizona. We also cover hard news, and we bring our viewers the latest on local and national events.

Where did you grow up?

Appleton, Wis., The growing city is about 30 minutes from Green Bay. #GoPackGo

Favorite color?

Yellow

Favorite TV shows or movies?

I’m really into documentaries and docuseries. But I’m also a sucker for sitcoms. One Day at a Time, Friends, Seinfeld, etc. Both Insecure and Euphoria on HBO also get honorable mentions.

Favorite local restaurants or other haunts?

SO MANY! I love Taco Chelo in Downtown Phoenix, the Chandler location of U.S. Egg, and West Valley food truck Pupuseria Dona Rosa. I could literally go on and on.

Three things readers would be surprised to know about you?

I prefer podcasts over shows, movies and even music. If you’re in my car, you’ll hear a podcast.

I used to be the news editor at the University of Miami’s student newspaper, The Miami Hurricane. I thought I wanted to be in print journalism for a while.

I was almost pushed by Jennifer Lopez’s bodyguard because I ran up to her as she was walking through a park in New York before a performance. It was worth it. 😊
