#CSOM – Is It Possible To Rebuild Trust in Government, NGOs, and Media?

That’s a good question.  And for more than 25 years, Edelman has been taking a hard look at the concept of trust and its impact on the relationships we have with business, governments, NGOs and media.

Edelman’s trust research, the Edelman Trust Barometer, is the topic of this episode of Copper State of Mind.

This year’s barometer focused on trust and what they refer to as the “crisis of grievance.”   And maybe it is no surprise that the majority of those researched, 61%, have a moderate or high sense of grievance against the government, business and those with wealth.   The impact of grievance is ultimately the erosion of trust in those same institutions.

You can download the Top 10 findings here. Of those, the one that is most troubling is that 4 in 10 respondents approve of hostile Activision.  That in order to bring about change, this group approves of such actions as attacking people online, intentionally spreading disinformation, threatening or committing violence, and damaging public or private property are all an acceptable to way express yourself.

It is probably no surprise that this feeling is more prevalent in the 18-34 group as that demographic has only known a world where mis- and disinformation is widespread and online bullying is an everyday occurrence.

As communicators, we must do everything we can to improve the trust our stakeholders have in the institutions and organizations that we represent.  For those institutions, transparency and honesty must top the list of values that you measure your success against.
