Are You Using Captions?
Previously on the blog, I have discussed the importance of visual content in the digital age and how videos can help brands tell stories and truly stand out online. With so much content swirling around, it is important to consider one often overlooked element to your brand videos – captions.
According to a study from Verizon and Publicis, 92% of consumers watch videos with the sound off and 50% rely on captions and in addition, whether it is based on likes, views or impressions, captioned videos are more successful across all platforms for a number of reasons.
One of the important reasons for including captions is inclusiveness. Approximately 48 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss, which can make it hard for them to truly enjoy your content when it is posted without captions or automated captions. Including captions can allow you to engage with viewers and expand your reach.
Next time you are in the process of shooting and editing your video content, consider leaving a space in the frame where captions will be easier to read whether you edit them in yourself or if they are generated automatically by the platform you are posting to. Also, keep in mind the script for your video if you will be speaking, as it will help make it easier to synchronize your captions to your footage.
If you are already creating great videos that spread your message, go the extra mile by including captions. You will be glad you did.
