I met Allison Rodriguez a few weeks ago when she served on the SPJ panel regarding fake news. She is a multimedia journalist for ABC15 News. Prior to that she spent two years at KYMA in Yuma anchoring and producing the weekday primetime newscasts. When she’s not chasing down stories, she’s video chatting with her family back east, taking in a show, dancing or hitting the movie theaters.
Allison, tell us a little bit about yourself.
Did you always know you wanted to be in news?
No. I actually didn’t know what I wanted to do for a long time. But I always had a love of public speaking and meeting new people. It all kind of came together when I took my first broadcast journalism class in college in Chicago. That’s when everything clicked. I call it my “aha” moment. Please don’t sue me Oprah.
What’s your favorite type of music:
Is it cliché to say I like all kinds? Well I do! From The Beatles to Selena…even Mozart! You’ll find all of those in my iTunes. But I’m currently loving anything with Maluma and Shakira.
And your favorite color:
It’s white. Boring but true.
What are some of your favorite haunts:
You’ll find me at any really good pizza place or Mexican restaurant. Birreria Obregon is one of my staples. I also love the pastries at The Henry and LGO.
And I’m always down for a trip to the Grand Canyon. I’ve never seen anything so beautiful! You also can’t go wrong with a trip to Sedona.
Pizza, pizza and more pizza!
Least favorite food:
I just can’t get down with Brussels sprouts. Hard pass.
What three things readers would be surprised to know about you:
Last thing to know about me -- my family is everything to me. They are my tribe and the ultimate Rodriguez squad. That support pushes me to do the best I can every day.
