Oh No…tre Dame
Yes, I am a Notre Dame fan.
Yes, even after this. And this. And even this.
But, even fans have their limits.
Last week, Notre Dame announced new rules for media covering their practices. And these were the guidelines. Ummm, what?
So, independent media can no longer report on injuries it witnesses during practice? Nor can they report on quotes made by the coaching staff during practice?
As you can imagine, true media folks are pretty outraged at the list of requirements, but even more outraged that this allows for the public relations and sports information office of the team to truly own major updates. This means the school almost totally controls what we as fans – and haters – can know about our team.
And they aren’t the only ones. LSU totally bans the media from pre-season practice and many other schools have strictly enforced social media rules about media posting during practices unless sanctioned.
In a world where our own president is doing nearly the same thing – albeit while publicly libeling the media-at-large – I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. But, as a fan and communications gal who truly appreciates the hard work beat reporters do on a daily basis, I expected better.
