#MediaMonday Update – Fernanda Santos
We profiled Fernanda Santos in June 2016, then with the New York Times. A lot has changed for Fernanda over the past several years.
She shared an update on her Facebook page recently and gave us permission to share it here as well.
Fernanda – what’s new?
I’ve been named a contributing columnist for Washington Post Opinions, reporting from and about the American Southwest.
The Southwest — and Arizona, the state I call home — are undergoing a profound transformation that transcends the change in numbers happening with the rise of its Latino population. It’s a great barometer to what is happening or might happen elsewhere in the U.S.
I want to explore these changes in my columns as I experience these changes. I’ll aim to give readers worldwide a nuanced inside-out perspective that I believe is missing from much of the writing about Arizona and the Southwest in national news.
There’s also something else about this region that’s special: I moved to Phoenix in 2012 to write about the Southwest for the New York Times. Though I knew no one, I found a community that carried me through the dark times following the death of my husband, Mike. This community is still with me. That’s also the Arizona I know.
Throughout history, people have come to Arizona for fresh starts and reinventions. I didn’t come for either, but when I had to do both, Arizona received me with open arms. Expect a bit of that in my columns.
And more.
I also have a monthly newsletter, where I share exclusive updates on my next book project, a memoir. I invite you to subscribe to it on my website, www.fernandasantos.com.
