#MediaMonday – Steve Stockmar

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Steve Stockmar, editor of the Glendale Independent and Valley arts & culture editor for YourValley.net, which covers Apache Junction, Glendale, Litchfield Park, Paradise Valley, Peoria, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Sun City, Sun City West, and Surprise.

How did you get your start in the media? What is your story?

As a young kid I was a huge sports fan, and at age 11 I got a subscription to Sports Illustrated. That was my first introduction into the reality that writing for a living was possible. I’m now in my 26th year as a journalist and still love it.

Tell us about your outlet and types of story pitches you want?

Independent Newsmedia is the most forward-thinking, innovative news organization with which I have ever worked. As a nonprofit, all our resources are reinvested into our products, and as an independent organization, we as a newsroom do not write editorials or opinion pieces. We leave those voices to our communities and residents. As for story pitches, we look for any people or organizations making a difference throughout the Valley first and foremost.

Where did you grow up?

The Chicagoland area.

Favorite color?

Tie-dye.

Favorite TV shows or movies?

“West Wing,” “Northern Exposure,” “The Godfather II,” and anything my wife wants to watch, ha.

Favorite local restaurants or other haunts?

There’s a terrific coffee shop in downtown Glendale called Black Sheep. Highly recommended. Also, a sports bar in Peoria, The Moon Saloon, that caters to Chicago sports teams fans. The way our teams are currently playing it’s more of a support group these days.

Three things readers would be surprised to know about you?

(When I have the time) I enjoy performing in community theatre; I play in a vintage baseball league that features uniforms and equipment based on the 1880s; and I’m a huge Grateful Dead fan.
