#MediaMonday – Sharon Brooks

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Albuquerque Business First editor-in-chief Sharon Brooks.

Okay, Sharon, time to share…

What and where are you working these days? Tell us all about it!

I am the editor-in-chief for Albuquerque Business First. I started working with American City Business Journals in February 2023 as managing editor for San Antonio Business Journal. I got a promotion in the company and started working as editor-in-chief with ABF on Dec. 2, 2024. I moved to New Mexico from San Antonio, Texas, the week prior, on Nov. 26, 2024.

What kind of pitches, if any, do you prefer? What topics are of most interest to you?

Albuquerque Business First is a business journal, so we write stories that are targeted toward businesses and business people. We are always looking for economic development, commercial real estate, banking and finance, career and workplace, energy, tech and inno stories. We are also interested in health care expansions and education expansions locally and across the state of New Mexico. We cover all of New Mexico.

How did you get your start in the media? What’s your story?

When I was young, I wanted to be Lois Lane. When I graduated high school, I originally considered a career in engineering, attending courses and winning scholarships and an internship in industrial engineering. I realized while in college that I was still interested in journalism and changed direction to enter communications courses. I started working as an investigative and general assignment reporter with a weekly newspaper in Southeast Texas, The Examiner. I eventually became editor of its business journal, The Southeast Texas Business Journal, which is not affiliated with my current employer but gave me the experience I needed to pursue a career in business journalism.

Where did you grow up?

Vidor, Texas – a small town in Southeast Texas

Favorite TV shows or movies?

I like mainly mysteries and musicals.

TV: Only Murders in the Building, Will Trent, Severance, The Traitors, Firefly

Movies: Hamilton, Barbie, Clue, The Shining, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Favorite color? Blue

What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?

I have read every one of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple mysteries, books and short stories included, as well as The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
