#MediaMonday – Rudy Rivas
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Rudy Rivas, the long-time digital managing editor for Arizona’s Family (both KTVK 3TV and KPHO CBS 5) who was recently named the station’s managing editor.
So, Rudy, time to share!
Tell us how you got your start in media? Tell us your story!
I got my start in news in high school when I was an intern for a high school football show in San Diego. It was my first experience in a newsroom and I was in awe of the operations behind the scenes. After that internship, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in journalism.
Tell us how you came to work at AZ Family?
I worked at ABC15 for about seven years and learned the inner workings of digital and the assignment desk. I was looking for a new challenge, got a call from some folks at Arizona’s Family…and the rest is history.
Tell us about what you cover it and how – and what do you want to be pitched/if at all?
I work with all our reporters on daily basis to cover the latest stories in the Valley. I look for stories on multiple digital platforms: From Facebook to Nextdoor…I am always checking in on conversations happening online.
I love stories that truly are topical and have legs to rerun in several shows. I am also a big fan of getting the first chance at a story, run it past me and if you tell me you’re only pitching it me, I’ll let you know if I am interested or not ASAP.
Where did you grow up?
San Diego
Favorite type of music?
Right now, I have really been into Yacht Rock. You can’t go wrong with some Boz Scaggs, Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald!
Favorite color?
Orange
Favorite TV shows or movies?
I am still a reality TV junkie….big fan of Amazing Race, Big Brother, Survivor.
Favorite local restaurants or other haunts?
I really like to try local Mexican restaurants. I live in the East Valley and some of my favorite spots are El Gordo, Tacos Tijuana and The Taco Spot. Outside of Mexican food, my favorite places in the Valley are The Hidden House, El Chorro, Toro at the Princess, North and Sicilian Butcher.
One fun fact about you outside of work?
I am a plane geek. My favorite spot to be is at the airport. I look at air traffic over Phoenix and around the world for fun…always looking for interesting routes or planes in the sky. If you haven’t played around with FlightRadar24 app…you’re missing out.
