#MediaMonday – Rahmun Aung Khin

Happy #MediaMonday! The latest feature comes to us from Rahmun Aung Khin of @TopRahmun, a Phoenix-based food and culture content creator highlighting restaurants, chefs, events, and the stories behind Arizona’s hospitality community.

So, time to share!

How did you get your start in journalism? Tell us your story.

I’ve always been drawn to storytelling and media. Growing up in Phoenix in the 80s, I was fascinated with audio, video, music, and film. I started making hip hop music when I was a teenager and continued performing and releasing projects through my 20s and 30s. I also explored acting and film along the way, which helped shape my love for storytelling and creative production.

At the same time, food and restaurant culture were a huge part of my upbringing. My father immigrated to the United States from Burma (Myanmar) in the 1960s and eventually became successful in business. One thing he loved to do was take our family out to restaurants. What always stood out to me was how he built relationships with the owners. Everywhere we went, he knew the people behind the restaurant, and I grew up seeing how much community and connection mattered in that world.

In June 2025, my wife encouraged me to start creating content instead of just leaving reviews. She saw how much we were already exploring restaurants and said I should share those experiences. That led me to launch @TopRahmun, where I combine my background in storytelling with my love for Phoenix’s food scene by highlighting restaurants, chefs, and the people behind them.

What led you to your current role in the media?

What led me here was really a love for Phoenix’s restaurant community and the people behind it. I’ve always believed there’s more to a restaurant than just the food. There are stories, risks, and passionate chefs and owners who put their heart into what they create. My goal has been to highlight those stories, not just show a plate of food.

As I started creating content, I began connecting with chefs, restaurateurs, and local businesses, and being invited out to experience their restaurants firsthand. That naturally grew into a larger role in the media and influencer space, where I now get to help spotlight the people and places that make Phoenix’s food scene so special.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. I’m proud to be a native Phoenician. My father immigrated to the United States from Burma (Myanmar) in the 1960s, and growing up in a family that blended cultures while building a life here in Phoenix shaped a lot of who I am today.

Where do you live now? What’s your favorite thing about living in Phoenix?

I still live in Phoenix today, and one of my favorite things about the city is how much it’s grown while still maintaining its sense of community. Phoenix is truly a melting pot with incredible diversity in its food scene. You can find influences from all over the world here, along with amazing hidden gems and local stories. That mix of cultures, chefs, and entrepreneurs makes it an exciting place to explore and share with others.

Favorite type of music?

Hip hop has always been my favorite, especially classic hip hop and music that tells a story. I’ve always been drawn to artists who can paint a picture through their lyrics. It’s probably why storytelling resonates so much with me in the content I create today. I’ve also released hip hop music myself over the years, so it’s always been a big part of my life creatively.

Favorite color?

Red. It represents passion, power, and energy. It’s a color that symbolizes confidence, strength, and action, which are all things that resonate with how I approach life and my work.

List three things that readers would be surprised to learn about you.

  1. My great grandfather helped design the Ford Thunderbird for Henry Ford and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine for his work.
  2. I’ve released hip hop music over the years and even collaborated on a song with Tony Yayo from G-Unit.
  3. I created a short-form content concept called the 15 Second Food Review, where I review a restaurant in 15 seconds or less.

Do you take pitches? If so, any guidelines?

Yes, absolutely. I’m always open to hearing about great stories and opportunities. I enjoy covering locally owned restaurants, chef-driven concepts, restaurant openings, special menu launches, food events, and unique local stories around Arizona. I’m also open to national chains if there’s an interesting angle or experience involved.

I’m comfortable working with hosted or paid collaborations when they align with my audience and content style. In addition to food, I’m also starting to expand into hotel, travel, and lifestyle content.

What lead time do you prefer for content or pitches?

Generally, one to two weeks of lead time works well for most opportunities, especially events or openings. I’m also open to short notice invitations if my schedule allows. For larger collaborations or more involved projects, two to three weeks of planning time is ideal.
