#MediaMonday – Pete Mangione
Happy #MediaMonday! This feature comes to us from Pete Mangione, meteorologist at Arizona’s Family.
Take it away, Pete!
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Denver, Colorado.
How did you get your start in working in the media? Tell us your story and experience.
Growing up in Denver, I was always fascinated by the weather. We had many types of weather: thunderstorms, hail, blizzards, and the occasional tornado. (Although Denver also gets more sunny days than people think). I also loved watching local news, especially the weather forecast, so I knew I wanted to be a TV meteorologist from a very young age. After college, I worked as a computer programmer for a few years before studying meteorology at Penn State. I obtained some good on-air experience on a PBS show called Weather World which was produced out of Penn State. My first on-air job was in Boise, Idaho followed by a 13 year position on Providence, Rhode Island. In 2021, I took a break from TV and worked as a meteorologist at a tech startup for 3 years. I returned to the TV industry when I joined Arizona’s Family in May of 2024.
Tell us about your outlet. What types of pitches are you looking for?
I am looking for ideas that involve weather, climate, or science. This includes any type of outdoor community or charity event since good weather is part of making these events successful.
What are your favorite stories to work on?
My favorite stories involve combining weather and climate topics with subjects that people care about. For example, many people in Arizona love to discuss the Saguaro cactus. A few months ago, I interviewed an expert from the Desert Botanical Garden about how the recent hot summers affect the baby Saguaros.
What are some of your hobbies?
Golf, skiing, workout classes, cornhole, paddle boarding, computer coding, and kickball.

Favorite movie: Fargo

Book: Into the Wild
Favorite sports team?
The Denver Broncos are my favorite team, but the Arizona Cardinals are now my 2nd favorite team!
