#MediaMonday – MacKenzie Brower
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from MacKenzie Brower, a reporter for Independent Newsmedia focused on the Northeast Valley and Paradise Valley in particular.
How did you get your start in the media? What is your story?
I attended Northern Arizona University’s School of Communication for photojournalism and graduated in 2022. I knew from working with my high school yearbook that reporting was something I wanted to pursue.
I was the director of photography and editor-in-chief for The Lumberjack at NAU, breaking news intern for the Arizona Republic and a column writer for FlagLive!
I was recommended by a professor to work for the Daily Independent, which turned out to be a great fit for me because we share the same values in the industry, especially work-life balance, and mental health, which many journalists struggle with due to the pressure of deadlines. I also believe community reporting should inform social change, as journalism has a history of holding powerful entities accountable. I am passionate about protecting the environment and human rights.
Tell us about your outlet and types of story pitches you want?
Our readers at the Daily Independent, and specifically the areas I cover in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, are interested in real estate development, tourism news, business growth, local politics and stories of significant members in the community.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Colorado and have lived in Arizona for 10 years.
