#MediaMonday – Lauren Wong
This #MediaMonday feature comes to us from Lauren Wong, the digital editor for CITYSunTimes, a community newspaper serving the North Valley.
Tell us more, Lauren!
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the Chicagoland area. After going to school in Florida at the University of Tampa I decided I wanted to explore somewhere out west. After applying for jobs, I got my first offer in Arizona!
How did you get your start in writing? Tell us your story and experience.
I always loved writing growing up, but it was after taking a journalism class in high school that I decided that was what I wanted to get into. I’ve also always loved taking photos so photojournalism was always the goal. At Tampa I majored in journalism and minored in photography and got the chance to study abroad twice. I spent a summer in Iceland learning about photography and during my junior year I went to Cuba where we studied their way of government-run press.
Tell us about your outlet and beat. What types of pitches are you looking for?
I work as a Digital Editor for the CITYSunTimes, which is owned by O’Rourke Media Group. While it is a monthly print publication that primarily covers the North Valley, we are working on growing our digital footprint and covering fun stories from across the Valley. I feature unique locals in the area, sharing their stories and I also write entertainment-based pieces. With a focus on travel, I love sharing hidden gems, itinerary ideas, one-of-a-kind businesses and things to do.
I’m looking for pitches on anything new and exciting happening whether it’s in the Valley or a road trip. You can see an example here.
What are your favorite stories to work on?
It’s my love of travel that landed me in Arizona, so I love searching for hidden gems and sharing fun itineraries.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love photography, reading, hiking, camping, traveling and basically anything outdoors.
Favorite movie?
I love the Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Do you have any favorite local spots?
I love working from different coffee shops; one of my favorites is Fourtillfour Cafe.
