#MediaMonday – Kenny Quayle
Today’s #MediaMonday feature is Kenny Quayle, a reporter for the Maricopa Monitor covering city news, education, business, crime, and more in Maricopa and the surrounding areas.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Tampa, Florida but I currently live in Phoenix.
How did you get your start in writing? Tell us your story and experience.
I have been writing since I was a child, and I grew up learning to be a storyteller from my grandmother. I decided I wanted to be a journalist in the seventh grade to put those skills to good use and do some good for the world.
Tell us about your outlet and beat. What types of pitches are you looking for?
I work for the Maricopa Monitor, a paper under the larger company Pinal Central. We cover local news in the city of Maricopa, a small but rapidly growing city. I am a general assignment reporter, so I cover anything and everything related to the city. I’m always open to all kinds of pitches.
What are your favorite stories to work on?
My favorite stories to work on are investigations and environmental stories. I find investigations engaging, fun, and impactful, so naturally they are the most fun for me. I also have a specialization in science due to some prior work in the field and my deep love for animals, so I am particularly well suited for environmental stories.
What are some of your hobbies?
My hobbies include caring for my many pets, rescuing other animals, playing video games, and collecting vinyl records.
Favorite movie and/or TV show and/or book?
My favorite movie is You’re Next. My favorite TV show is American Dad. My favorite book is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Do you have any favorite local spots?
My favorite local spots are largely in Phoenix, but I really love El Chullo Peruvian Restaurant in Phoenix.
