#MediaMonday – Kate Reed
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Kate Reed, the new owner and publisher of Raising Arizona Kids.
So, Kate, time to share!
Tell us how you got your start in writing? Tell us your story!
Funny story…I’m not a writer! I studied journalism in college but I got pregnant right out of college and knew I wanted to be home with my baby. I started selling ads for a tourism magazine and fell in love with the magazine industry.
And how did you come to RAK?
When my son was born the hospital sent me home with a bag that included a copy of Raising Arizona Kids. I was a new and inexperienced mom and the content was so helpful in finding things to do with my baby. When my son was 2, I saw the magazine was looking for a sales representative and I applied on a whim. I met with Karen Barr, the publisher, and started working immediately. I spent six years getting to know all these wonderful clients and cultivating relationships so when Karen asked if I was interested in taking over the magazine I knew my journey at RAK wasn’t over. I now have three boys and in many ways RAK is helping me raise my own kids!
Tell us about the outlet and types of story pitches you want?
Things related to parenting or families. It doesn’t have to be kid-related. I always joke that it’s not the kid reading our content so we should cater to the parents! We like featuring local clients and stories.
Where did you grow up?
When I was young we moved all around because my dad was in the military. I was born on base in Germany, and we moved back and forth between different cities in Virginia, Alabama and Arizona. When my dad retired and took a civilian job I was in high school and we moved to Scottsdale. I went to college at ASU and stuck around.
Favorite type of music?
I’ll pretty much listen to anything. Usually I just tell my Alexa to play top hits!
Favorite color?
Sunflower yellow
Favorite TV shows or movies?
Honestly I don’t really watch much television, whenever we have the TV on it’s mostly kid-related or just background noise. But when we do watch a movie it’s usually an action movie or something scary like ‘A Quiet Place 2’ that we recently watched.
Favorite local restaurants or other haunts?
We are often found at our local State48 Brewery. We go at least once a week.
Least favorite food?
Green olives
