#MediaMonday – Jessica Herrera

This #MediaMonday feature comes to us from Jessica Herrera, a radio producer for Audacy Phoenix and host of the Valley Voices program.

Tell us more, Jessica!

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Being born and raised in the Valley of the Sun has shaped who I am. I am lucky to have grown up with so much music, culture and people around me. I am so proud to be an Arizonan.

How did you get your start in working in the media? Tell us your story and experience so far.

I started my media journey through an internship with CBS Radio. It was a large intern group, and it was difficult to stand out, near the end of the semester I was the only person chosen to work with LIVE 101.5 at the time and I started working in promotions. I learned all about talking to listeners, clients and working promotional events as well as concerts. It was a lot of work but at the same time so exciting; I had the opportunity to meet many artists like Becky G, Rita Ora, Tyga, Flo Rida, Sean Paul and the list goes on! Through the years as the company evolved into Entercom and now Audacy; I’ve had the opportunity to learn programming and explore the studios. I learned how to produce for other popular radio shows for LIVE 101.5, KMLE 107.9 and BIG 94.5. Through my experience as a producer and board operator, this summer I finally got my own show! The Valley Voices is Audacy’s PSA show and I am very proud of it. I talk to organizations across the valley that are doing amazing things for people, animals etc. I get to share my passion for helping others with audiences all over the valley as well as shine a light on topics that affect our community. Through my show, I am combining my work experience and what I have learned as a Cronkite Alum. I am very thankful to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU. I learned so much and expanded my work as a journalist working with Cronkite News as an anchor, reporter and meteorologist on AZ PBS and as an intern for 12 News. I was also chosen to represent ASU on The College Tour en Espanol, a show on Amazon Prime. I wrote my episode, worked with the producers, and showcased the journalism program for audiences to see all over! I truly believe that the education I received prepared me to be who I am today in the media. I feel confident and proud to represent my community in radio, television and streaming platforms.

Tell us about your show and your role? What types of pitches are you looking for?

I am the host of the Valley Voices show, a public service announcement show on Audacy Phoenix which airs Sunday mornings on LIVE 101.5, KMLE 107.9 and BIG 94.5. I interview organizations and leaders that are actively working to help community members who need it most. I highlight organization’s programs, services and encourage listeners to support in any way they can. I am always looking for non-profit organizations that offer a variety of resources for people, animals etc. Free or low-cost care for people who are in real need across the Valley. I want to see non-profits engaging with the community, hosting events, making meaningful connections with people and really just trying to make a positive change in the world.

What are your favorite stories to work on?

I love working on stories that involve the youth. Side note, I worked in education for many years. I was a manager for an after-school program that helped families receive free child care. Any stories that involve the youth bring me back to my days working at a school. I love to see the next generations dreaming big and doing good for others.

I also love animal and nature stories. I have interviewed animal rescue organizations and love connecting with others who also have a passion for helping dogs and cats find their forever homes.

What are some of your hobbies?

I love visiting new spots around town. Some of my favorite things to do are discovering new restaurants, catching a live show, creating social media content and of course shopping!

Favorite movie?

I love going to the movies. I like comedies, romance and thrillers. I don’t have a favorite movie because it’s too difficult to pick just one, but I am recently into rewatching 90’s movies. There’s just something about the classics that are just so cool! The retro vibe is in style in my opinion.

What are your favorite local spots?

I love the Roosevelt Arts District. There are art spaces, bars and restaurants for just about anybody. Cobra Arcade Bar and Hi-Score is fun, I love listening to live DJ’s. I like Taco Chelo and Taco Boys for dinner. The Churchill is also a very cool spot. They have fun events there like yoga sessions and cool little local shops. I enjoy shopping locally!

What is the best way to reach you?

I love to connect with people. The best way to reach me is on Instagram at @jessica_jinger and @thevalleyvoices. I am currently working on my YouTube channel. I want to showcase my videography and editing skills. It will be called Jessica Jinger TV and I’ll be covering local businesses, artists, shops, a little bit of everything! Find me there too. 🙂
