#MediaMonday – Ford Hatchett 

Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from a member of the local media with one of the coolest names of all time in ABC 15 multi-media journalist Ford Hatchett.

Okay, Ford, time to share…

What kind of pitches, if any, do you prefer? What topics are of most interest to you?

I’m a general assignment reporter but tend to focus on my beat of public safety, crime and policing. Any new developments or technologies there peak my interest. Our station is on a big kick of including “people impacted” so anytime you can include not just an expert, but a “real person” impacted, the odds of me pursuing the story increase exponentially.

How did you get your start in the media? What’s your story?

While in high school I wrote and broadcast for a satirical “Weekend Update”-style newscast; it was there I caught the bug for media production and soon found a love for real journalism.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina but played ice hockey, which led me to spend my high school years in northern Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Favorite TV shows or movies?

I’ve got a pretty eclectic taste, but I’d probably say Silence of the Lambs, The Dark Knight and A Star is Born as a few of my favorite films off the top of my head. I mostly watch news or sports on TV but will occasionally get sucked into an HBO show like Succession or The White Lotus.

Love to read, too, and am always on the hunt for new book suggestions (despite the ever-rotating cast of unread books on my nightstand)

Favorite color?

I’m a graduate of Syracuse University and fear they’d revoke my degree if I answered with any color other than orange.

What is something readers would be surprised to know about you?

I’m not full of many surprises, but after yelling at referees most of my athletic life, I now officiate high school and college hockey. Still not the best athlete in my family – my younger sister plays volleyball at The Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
