#MediaMonday – Craig Harris

We’ve profiled Craig Harris as a #MediaMonday feature in the past, most recently about a year ago when he left print journalism to take a role as an investigative reporter in San Diego.  Craig has returned to Arizona and is joining the team at 12News/KPNX as an investigative reporter.

Welcome back!

What’s it like to be back in the Valley?

I’m absolutely thrilled. While those who know me know I’m a die-hard Oregon Ducks fan, it’s good to be back in my adopted home. I love Arizona, and it kind of feels like I never left. Brahm Resnik, one of the BEST journalists in metro-Phoenix and now my colleague at 12 News, was my editor at The Arizona Republic when I first started here 25 years ago. And, he’s aged much better than me. It’s fun coming to the same building where I spent two decades at The Arizona Republic. I’m also truly blessed to be working with a TV station that has a major commitment to investigative journalism, and we have some of the most respected anchors in Phoenix.

What are some of the differences you’ve noticed since you’ve been away?

There’s MASSIVE growth in Gilbert, where we lived for about 20 years. I was completely shocked at all the industry and homes that have gone up the past four years. And, the freeways have expanded.

We know you’ll be doing investigative work, what types of stories will you be focusing on?

I’ll be focusing on government watchdog stories including charter schools, ESAs and how traditional school districts are using public funds.

What are some differences between print and broadcast investigative journalism?

You need to be more organized because you need to get sources on camera instead of just calling on the phone. So, there’s a lot more prep work for stories, and if you are doing GA, you need to come in with several pitches…..But, it’s still journalism and informing the community on what is going on. I’m all in favor of a strong newspaper and strong TV stations competing to tell stories and act as watchdogs.

How can we get in touch with you?

I still have my old number – 602-509-3613, and my email is charris2@12news.com.
