#MediaMonday – Alexa D’Angelo
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Alexa D’Angelo, the editor of the Community Impact Newspaper in both Chandler and Tempe.
Alexa, time to share!
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Peoria, Ariz. A born and raised Arizona girl! I went to elementary and high school in Peoria and then went to Arizona State University for my undergraduate degree in journalism.
How did you get your start in writing? Tell us your story!
I always loved writing—I was one of those kids whose best subject was English. In high school, I was trying to get placed into a theater class, but my schedule wouldn’t work with it. My guidance counselor suggested I take a journalism class and that was that. I fell in love with that class and became an editor of my high school newspaper my senior year. I loved writing about arts and entertainment in high school—but the throughline of all my writing to date has been people with a good story.
Tell us about your outlets.
Community Impact Newspaper was founded by John and Jennifer Garrett in Texas in 2005. Since then, the company has expanded its hyperlocal reporting to Tennessee and Arizona. The first Arizona outlet opened in Gilbert four years ago, followed by Chandler the next year. Our latest edition launched in Tempe in April! We cover transportation, development, local city councils and school boards, business and the news that matters most to residents living in our communities. I am the editor of our Chandler and Tempe editions.
What are your favorite stories to work on?
My favorite stories to work on are development stories. I love knowing what’s going on in the cities I’m covering and informing residents about the new things coming to town. We also write features each month on a locally-owned business and a locally-owned restaurant. Those are always so much fun for me, I enjoy hearing how someone started their business and created something from the ground up. It’s an honor to tell those stories and share them with our readers!
What are some of your hobbies?
I read a lot, that’s usually my go-to with any down time. I also enjoy going to workout classes! I have also been known to make a playlist for every event—big or small. Music is something I’m passionate about—I love live music of all kinds!
Favorite movie? TV show? Book?
Favorite movie: Jurassic Park
TV show: The West Wing
Book: This changes weekly I wish could narrow it down to one but I simply cannot.
