The Importance of Getting Visual on Social Media
Aside from my love of writing, I have a passion for creating graphics. I get to use a different part of my brain and my fingers get a break from clanking on the keyboard. Although I probably spend more time on them then I should, it makes a vast difference when creating visuals for social media.
Now, would it be easier to slap some copy together and pull an image off google? Sure! … It could also get you sued.
Creating visually stimulating content has the power to generate engagement, grab attention and elevate brand awareness.
Here are some basic design principles to consider:
- Legibility: make sure your text is clean and easy to read. Don’t get too fancy with the font and make sure the font size is appropriate.
- Color: be mindful of the colors you are using and understand why you are using them. Do they contrast nicely, or do the bleed into one another? Do they properly convey your message? Think about the feelings you are trying to evoke and make sure your palette aligns.*When creating content for a client, be sure to match the colors in the graphics with their established branding.
- Typography: Remember that blog post on Why Fonts Matter? Much like color, typography has the ability to express mood and convey feelings. When deciding which one to use, think about the desired tone of your words.
The fundamental building block of any brand is consistency. Always attach the logo to your image. Always use branded colors. If your graphics look and feel cohesive and related, then users can form a clearer understanding of your brand in their minds.
