How To React To Controversial Topics
When the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade was announced, there was much discussion amongst our public relations colleagues about how to handle the news. Should we advise our clients and companies to post a statement? What should we tell our employees? What guidance can we offer on a topic that is guided as much by our political and religious views as societal and personal views.
There have been many conversations like this over the past several years. And the truth is, each time it comes up I go back to the idea of authenticity. Our first thoughts will always be “we should say something.” And maybe you should. But take a step back to consider the authenticity of the response. Will you be adding value to the conversation or creating more controversy? Are you posting one thing on your business page and another on your personal pages?
I’m not sure I have the right answer, but I do know that we owe it to our businesses and our clients to talk through these controversial subjects, consider our reactions and actions, and lead with authenticity.
