#FunFactFriday – The Year 2000

Last night, PRSA Phoenix and the Phoenix PR Pros Facebook group came together to celebrate the group hitting 2,000 members, win cool prizes (like a FinderBinder AZ subscription) and network. With the celebration being 2000s themed, this month’s #FunFactFriday covers the year 2000.

  • Google launched Google AdWords in 2000, a big milestone for online marketers. AdWords became the first self-serve online advertising platform and remains the biggest today.
  • CD sales peaked in the United States in 2000 with nearly a billion discs shipped. For comparison, CD sales in 2021 hit 46.6 million – the first sales increase in the U.S. in almost 20 years.
  • The price of a gallon of gas was $1.26, the average cost of a new house was $134,150 and a movie ticket was $5.39.
  • The 2000 Olympics were held in Sydney, Australia and the three mascots were Syd the Platypus, Millie the Echidna and Olly the Kookaburra. These Olympic games were the first-time women took part in weightlifting and the modern pentathlon.
  • American Beauty won the Oscar for Best Picture.
  • Survivor, ER and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire were the top shows of the year.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day was observed in all 50 states for the first time.
  • The Nokia 3310 was released, selling 125 million units worldwide.
  • The cost of a Super Bowl advertisement was $2.2 million. This year’s cost for a 30-second Super Bowl advertisement was $6.5 million.
