Do You Speaka My Language?
Phoenix continues to be a hot growth market. It seems it’s been that way my entire life! But where are all these people – 100,000 per year moving into the market — coming from?
A couple weeks ago, the city of Phoenix published information from the U.S. Census Bureau’s recently released data covering five years of migration patterns from its 2020 American Community Survey.
Leading the charge of those moving into the Valley of the Sun are Valley Girls. Actually, not just Valley Girls. The number one launching pad for people moving to Phoenix? The Los Angeles area, home of the original Valley Girls of the ‘80s.
Does that qualify as “gnarly” or does it fall into the “gag me with a spoon” category? Is it “totally fresh” or is the thought of it “grody to the max?” Is it “awesome,” “choice” or “bitchin’?”
However you’d describe it, it’s real and makes Arizona a great place for new and growing businesses. There are a few surprises on the list, but according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s findings, here’s where new Phoenicians are coming from:
- Los Angeles
- Tucson, Ariz.
- Asia
- Chicago
- Central America
- Seattle-Tacoma
- San Diego
- Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif.
- Flagstaff, Ariz.
- Canada and Mexico
- Portland, Ore.
- New York City
- Denver
- Minneapolis-St. Paul
- Prescott-Prescott Valley, Ariz.
- San Francisco Bay Area
- Las Vegas, Nev.
- Europe
- Dallas-Fort Worth
- Salt Lake City
Our new residents from these places, and others, make Arizona the third fastest-growing state in the nation, behind Texas and Florida.
