#CSOM – Public Relations in a Polarized Post-Election Environment
As an agency, we’ve stayed away from political clients, preferring to stay neutral in the work that we do. As individuals, we have our personal viewpoints and if/when the conversations have turned to politics, we have been mindful of each other’s beliefs. That is a testament to the respect we have for each other.
As I shared with the HMA team, for some, the results of the election were devasting, leaving people feeling angry, confused, frustrated and scared. For others, it was a victory, with policies that more align with their beliefs.
And although we don’t work specifically in the political arena, the outcome of this election is certainly going to work its way into our workplace and into our clients’ workplaces. As counselors, we are going to be asked how to navigate through what is sure to be changes in policies, cultural nuances and the like over the next four years.
I shared some thoughts on the current episode of Copper State of Mind. Central of which is recognizing that we need to focus on unifying messages and not feed into the polarization that has taken place. The Center for the Future of Arizona’s research shows (client) that we have much more in common than the rhetoric would suggest.
It is no surprise that the media landscape has changed. We not only have to pay attention to what we are creating and sharing, but what and where we are showing up in conversations not under our control.
This isn’t going to be easy and we need to give ourselves and our clients the time to sort through what’s to come.
