CSOM – Casualties in the War on Truth

When it was announced that Stephen Colbert’s late-night show wasn’t going to be renewed in the new year, many of us believed it had more to do with what he said than the financial situation that the network stated.  When Jimmy Kimmel was suspended specifically for what he said, at least for me, there wasn’t any doubt.

But late-night comedians are not the only ones that are being censored, journalists across the country are being told what to and not to write about.  Opinion page writers are strongly advised on what their opinions should be.  And media owners are dictating which sources should be included in stories.

The First Amendment protects journalism in the United States, yet there is a growing concern about governmental restrictions on press freedoms. Journalists are facing unprecedented attempts to silence them through lawsuits and intimidation, raising alarms about the future of the free press.

If we still believe that journalism is the “Fourth Estate” then we are teetering on the edge. The media has a vital role as a watchdog that holds our government and other powerful institutions accountable.

Adrian and I talk more about this on this week’s episode of Copper State of Mind.
