#CSOM Are You Living in a Local News Desert?
I firmly believe that the daily newspaper will not disappear. They may not look the same, they certainly won’t be delivered to subscribers the same way, but there will always be a daily newspaper.
Except where there’s not.
According to a recent study from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications, the demise of local newspapers is being felt around the country, with 127 newspapers shuttering this past year, leaving nearly 55 million Americans with limited to no access to local news.
Local news plays an important role in our communities. It is where we learn about what is happening at City Hall, at our local schools and with our social services agencies and faith-based organizations. It is where we learn about which businesses are thriving and which ones are struggling.
Smart news consumers need to gather information from a variety of sources, we can’t solely rely on the national news, we need access to what is happening right in our own backyard.
