#CSOM: AI in PR: Embracing Opportunities and Addressing Concerns

Advancing: The Story.  That is the name that Cision and PRWeek have given to their 8th annual Comms Report. Tracking and benchmarking tools and tactics that are important to the public relations sector, this survey takes a look at the industry and how as practitioners, we view certain topics.

We tackled artificial intelligence on this week’s episode of Copper State of Mind.

Not surprising, respondents are seeing that the generative AI tools at our disposal are notably improving and that the vast majority are using them as part of their overall communications strategy. But, there is still a level concern about the potential impact AI may have on individual roles and responsibilities.

But as Adrian points out in the episode, every concern could actually be an opportunity.

  • 32% say it is a daunting challenge to communicate to stakeholders the changes AI is bringing to the company/brand.

Opportunity – lead by example, if you are the one that has the knowledge, take on the responsibility of guiding your leadership on this topic.

  • 28% say communication jobs will be eliminated.

Opportunity – certainly a concern but if you are the person that takes the time to understand the technology, incorporate into your work and demonstrate its potential, you create job security.  Be the leader, not the follower.

  • 26% say budgets will shrink.

Opportunity – possibly, for thinks that are more tactical in nature. But nothing should replace the role of emotional intelligence and human connection when it comes to communication.

  • 14% say our “seat at the table” will be marginalized.

Opportunity – same as the budget concern. Nothing should replace the interaction between people and if you are at the table you show your value by contributing strategic and thoughtful ideas, solutions and implementation strategies.

Now, I am not all rose-colored glasses when it comes to the impact of AI, but as we’ve talked about before, there is an important role for this technology and it is up to us, the communications professionals, to understand it, embrace it and show its value in making us better at what we do.

Listen in for more on the topic.
