SMACNA Arizona Looks Toward Future

Leaders of the sheet metal industry in Arizona have come together to help Boy Scouts in the Grand Canyon Council earn their metalworking merit badges. Pictured are (l-r) Jim Dinan, president of the Arizona Chapter of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA Arizona), Dion Abril, business manager for SMART Union Local 359, Kasey Green of the Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Canyon Council and Carol Goguen, SMACNA Arizona’s executive director. SMACNA Arizona, along with SMART Union Local 359 and the Arizona Sheet Metal Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC), sponsor the merit badge by providing financial support and vocational training. In addition to completing a hands-on project, the scouts are required to research career opportunities, safety regulations and different types of metals and tools. They also learn about the history of the trade and career fields, including HVAC, computer-aided drafting and design (CAD) and welding. SMACNA is an international association of union contractors in the sheet metal and air conditioning industry representing 4,500 contributing contractor firms. The organization is committed to upholding the highest standards of quality and excellence in all facets of the sheet metal and air conditioning industry.
