REDW Welcomes James W. Guthrie, Jr. CPA, CGMA, as Principal and International Tax Practice Group Leader

(PHOENIX – January 19, 2024) — REDW Advisors and CPAs, one of the Southwest’s 10 largest advisory and CPA firms, also recognized among INSIDE Public Accounting’s Top 200 Accounting Firms, is pleased to announce veteran international tax leader James W. Guthrie, Jr. has joined the firm, serving both as Practice Group Leader of REDW’s growing international tax practice and as Principal. In his role, Guthrie – who will work closely with REDW’s offices across Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Oregon as well as with international team members – will provide guidance to clients to mitigate exposure to double taxation and ensure clients understand and remain current with all tax filing obligations. He will also support business development firmwide and mentoring the next generation of REDW’s firm leadership.

“Jim has extensive work serving individuals and businesses across various industries, both foreign corporations and U.S. entities doing business abroad, in tax planning and compliance. His experience coupled with his servant leadership and mentor mindset will ensure that our international tax practice continues to help clients thrive in the global economy,” said Steve Cogan, REDW Managing Principal.

Guthrie, both a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant, brings more than 30 years of experience to the position including in leadership roles within International Tax practices at CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP, Ernst & Young, LLP, Grant Thornton, LLP, and more. He also owned his own firm, serving as an International Tax Consultant, for several years. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, cum laude, from the University of Utah and his Master of Accountancy degree in Tax from Brigham Young University.

“My father was an international tax attorney and CPA, which led to our family living in England during some of my youth,” said Guthrie. “While there, we had the chance to explore Europe, and I had the opportunity to study many languages, which only fed my passion for international trade. From that young age, I knew I would be similarly involved in international business, much like my father, and after nearly 30 years, I am still just as passionate about the work as the day I started.”

Community minded, Guthrie served with Habitat for Humanity and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He has also been involved in extensive national disaster relief efforts nationwide.

“Over the course of my career, I have found that money and accomplishments are far less meaningful than experiencing times when a peer or client did or said something to make a positive difference in my life or when I have been able, even if only in a small way, to make a positive difference in another’s life,” said Guthrie. “REDW’s purpose to make meaningful contributions in the lives of each other, its clients, and communities spoke to me, and as a leader within the firm I am honored to help them fulfill on these promises each day.”
