Phoenix Holocaust Association to Hold Virtual Yom HaShoah Commemoration; Local Community Leaders to be Honored
(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – April 1, 2022) The Phoenix Holocaust Association will hold its annual communitywide Yom HaShoah Commemoration to honor the memory of those who perished during the Holocaust and recognize those who survived. The virtual event will be held on May 1, 2022 at 11 a.m. The theme of the program is: Never Again, BUT HOW?
This year’s Yom HaShoah Commemoration will feature a roundtable discussion between high school students and Holocaust survivors, music, and a memorial candle-lighting ceremony spotlighting six Holocaust survivors each lighting a candle representing a million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust.
Additional participants of the commemoration include Rabbi Andy Green of Congregation Or Tzion, Cantor Seth Ettinger of Congregation Beth Israel, and Shevet Shemesh Israeli Scouts. The high school student who wins the Herb Goldberg 2022 Moral Courage Essay Contest, sponsored by the ADL, will read his/her winning essay.
In addition, the event will honor two local community leaders with the annual Shofar Zakhor Award. High school teacher Ashley Crose of Scottsdale’s Saguaro High School will be honored for his contributions to the teaching of the Holocaust and Genocide Awareness and Janice Friebaum, who has worked tirelessly to further awareness, knowledge and remembrance of the Holocaust in Arizona as a leader of PHA and previously in Southern Florida.
“Like so many events this past year, our annual Yom HaShoah event will be virtual this year in order to ensure the safety of our guests,” said Eva Flaster, chair of the Yom HaShoah committee. “We have worked hard to create the same sense of connectedness that you would experience in-person via this virtual event.”
