Pascua Yaqui Tribe Re-Dedicates Guadalupe Annex in Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony, Introduces Seewa Tomteme

(GUADALUPE, Ariz. – Oct. 31, 2019) – The Pascua Yaqui Tribe celebrated the re-dedication of its Guadalupe Annex Building on Oct. 19, holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome the new Seewa Tomteme facility. Seewa Tomteme, which translates to Blooming Flower, will provide programming to the community of Guadalupe and local Tribal members with the help of the Guadalupe Community Partnership (GCP).
“We are so appreciative of all the work that was done for our community in Guadalupe, thanks to our grant from the Valley of the Sun United Way, as well as the International Interior Design Association’s Connect4 Program. (IIDA),” says Chairman Robert Valencia. “We’re very proud of the team that was involved and look forward to how this will benefit the community.”
The new facility will provide programming and resources including a food pantry, computer lab, meditation room, community garden as well resources to support health, substance abuse and child welfare. In total, the donated contributions to renovating the facility cost upwards of $200,000.
In addition to Tribal Council members, community members and GCP staff, Guadalupe Mayor Valerie Molina and Arizona Representative Rebecca Rios from District 27 were also in attendance.

The Pascua Yaqui Tribe is a federally recognized tribe of Yaqui Native Americans in southern Arizona encompassing five communities: New Pascua – the reservation, Old Pascua – in Tucson,
Barrio Libre – South Tucson, Marana – northwest of Tucson, and Guadalupe – southeast suburb of Phoenix. The tribe gained recognition by the United States government on Sept. 18, 1978. The Pascua Yaqui people descended from the Yaqui people of Mexico who first settled in the United States near Nogales and south Tucson in the early 1800s. In the early 20th century, the tribe began to expand into settlements north of Tucson. There are approximately 22,000 registered members of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. The GCP is a coalition of community programs whose mission is to provide services and information to the Guadalupe community that will promote healthy lifestyles and reduce risk factors through community engagement, education, and awareness. Its membership includes entities such as Department of Economic Security, Guadalupe Fire Department, Native Health, Girl Scouts, Frank Family Resource Center, school officials, town and tribal program staff, MCSO, First Things First, and many other representatives from programs that serve Guadalupe.
