One Step Beyond Receives Neighborhood Grant from Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation to Support Culinary Programming

(PHOENIX– Oct. 28, 2022) One Step Beyond, Inc. (OSBI)—a leading provider of comprehensive programming and services for adults who have intellectual disabilities—has received a 2022 Neighborhood Grant from the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation. The $5,000 donation will benefit OSBI’s Life Skills Culinary Program.

“Our culinary program helps participants discover their passions, achieve greater independence and advance their careers through culinary employment opportunities,” says Jeff Swanson, executive director of administration for One Step Beyond. “The Sprout grant will enable us to strengthen our programming with a focus on nutrition and education for developing healthy home cooking skills.”

The Life Skills Culinary Program teaches participants how to work in a homestyle kitchen to learn the necessary cooking skills needed for independent living or progression into OSBI’s Catering Program. The curriculum for the program is taught using a five-block system that covers safety and sanitation, healthy food plans, kitchen discovery, customer service and technique and timing skills.

Participants of the Life Skills Culinary Program participate in planning and preparing several internal catering events throughout the year. In addition, participants also receive classroom training on event planning that provide opportunities to gain the skills needed to advance to the Group Supported Employment Culinary Program.
