Arizona Association For Economic Development Announces Three Ben Warren Memorial Scholarship Winners

(PHOENIX – Nov. 1, 2018) — The Arizona Association for Economic Development (AAED) has announced that it has awarded three 2019 AAED Ben Warren Memorial Scholarships.   The recipients of the scholarships, which provide full tuition for the Arizona Basic Economic Development Course, are:

  • John Coomer, economic development project manager, town of Chino Valley;
  • Fernando Garcia, economic development specialist, city of Casa Grande; and
  • Loraine German, economic development communications manager, city of Glendale.

Ben Warren was one of AAED’s charter members and past-presidents.  He worked in economic development for 34 years and is credited with being an early pioneer in Arizona’s industry-attraction model while working for both Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service.

Joyce Grossman, AAED’s executive director, said this is the first time the organization had awarded three scholarships in one year.

“Due to the generosity of the family of Larry Evans, former AAED executive director, AAED was able to give three instead of one Ben Warren Scholarships for the 2019 Arizona Basic Economic Development Course,” Grossman explained.  “We are pleased to note that this gift helps us commemorate the 50th offering of this course in Arizona.  Prior to 2012, the course was presented by the University of Arizona.  Since that time AAED has administered the ‘crash course’ in Arizona economic development.”

AAED, founded in 1974, has a mission to serve as Arizona’s unified voice advocating for responsible economic development through an effective program of professional education, public policy, and collaboration.
