25 Years Later: Early Volunteer Experience at St. Mary’s Food Bank Inspires Brandon Rafi’s Lifelong Commitment to Giving

PHOENIX (Feb. 25, 2026) — Brandon Rafi returned to St. Mary’s Food Bank on Feb. 24 to mark 25 years since his first volunteer experience there as a high school student at Brophy College Preparatory. What began as a service opportunity during his teenage years helped shape his personal values, leadership philosophy and long-term commitment to philanthropy.

Rafi volunteered alongside 50 members of his team during the milestone event and presented a $10,000 donation to support St. Mary’s mission of addressing food insecurity across Arizona. The moment commemorated the experience that sparked a deeper awareness of community need and ultimately influenced the creation of Rafi’s Hope, a team member-led initiative dedicated to serving Arizona’s most vulnerable populations, particularly children and families.

“Brophy had a strong volunteer culture, and I’m grateful for that,” Rafi said. “What I learned during those early experiences was invaluable. It reminded me to focus my attention on others and understand that growth isn’t just about personal achievement, it’s about becoming the best version of yourself with the support of teachers, parents and mentors who help guide you along the way.”

Rafi said the hands-on experience at St. Mary’s provided lasting perspective. “You’re not just reading about a problem; you’re physically part of the solution. That experience changes you,” he said.

As his business ventures expanded, Rafi continued prioritizing volunteerism and philanthropy, eventually launching Rafi’s Hope to intentionally and sustainably address food insecurity and family stability throughout Arizona. The initiative recently opened its new headquarters to further strengthen volunteer coordination, community outreach and resource distribution efforts.

“Long-term volunteerism and consistent support allow us to serve our community effectively,” said Jerry Brown, director of public relations for St. Mary’s Food Bank. “Brandon’s decision to return 25 years after his first volunteer experience is a powerful reminder of how early exposure to service can shape a lifetime of community involvement.”

Rafi hopes the milestone encourages others to engage in service. “There’s a misconception that you have to choose between growing a business and giving back,” he said. “In reality, the two reinforce each other. You never know which experience will shape your future. For me, it started with volunteering.”
