#MediaMonday – Camaron Stevenson
Today’s #MediaMonday comes to us from Camaron Stevenson, managing editor of The Copper Courier.
Where did you grow up?
I lived in Mesa and Gilbert growing up and moved to central Phoenix when I was hired to work at 12 News in 2014.
How did you get your start in writing?
I’ve been writing my whole life! I used to script out movies we’d make as kids, then I got into writing short stories and news articles in high school.
Tell us about your outlet and what people should be pitching to you.
The Copper Courier is a civic media newsroom. Our mission is to protect and strengthen our democracy through credible, fact-based journalism that seeks to create a more informed, engaged, and representative Arizona. We strive to make the complicated process of how government works simple and accessible, and we welcome pitches that help our readers feel connected to the community they live in. We also love to showcase the wonderful state we live in and are always eager to report on upcoming events, lifestyle topics, and new business ventures for our audience to experience.
What are your favorite stories to work on?
I love reporting on arts and culture. When I worked at AZTV, I produced a weekly series highlighting local bands and musicians, and another on people in the Valley who were making a positive impact in the world around them. It’s inspiring to tell the stories of people who are so passionate and creative, and I think people get a lot of value from learning about all the good that’s happening around them.
What are some of your hobbies?
I have two kids, so their hobbies are my hobbies! That includes baseball, swimming, video games, and lots of reading. I also do some creative writing in my free time and am training to compete in amateur boxing.
Favorite movie? TV show?
It’s tough to try and pick a favorite movie, but I guess I’m a sucker for a young Matthew Broderick, because I could watch Ferris Bueller a million times and still laugh at each showing, and I will never pass up an opportunity to witness his hacking prowess in WarGames. Favorite TV show has got to be It’s Always Sunny.
