Today’s #MediaMonday features someone who helped me get my first taste of journalism at just 10 years old, letting me help her interview my siblings’ soccer teams for a story. You might know her as a friendly face who helps you start your morning: it’s Yetta Gibson, a weekday morning anchor for AZ Family on CBS 5 This Morning and Good Morning Arizona.

Yetta, time to share!

What’s your story? How you decided to get into journalism? I decided to get into journalism when a local anchor from my hometown of Atlanta visited my sixth-grade class for career day. She talked about her job on and off the camera and I was sold! Thanks to 3TV, I was finally able to meet her in 2010! Her name is Monica Kaufman, a TV legend in Atlanta. I was also inspired listening to Robin Roberts on the radio in Atlanta, when my dad used to drive me to school every morning. She was the best even back then on “Mike and Robin in the Mornings’ Yea!” Thanks to ASU and the Cronkite School, I was able to meet her as well!

I started on my career path in radio news located inside the CNN Center in Atlanta.  It was a wonderful gig and was heard by listeners of KISS 104.7 in Atlanta and the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show!

I joined the CBS 5 newsroom in 2015, but I’ve been working in the building for almost 10 years total. The station merged with CBS 5 about five years ago. My jobs, first and foremost, are always exciting, rarely a dull moment. I start at the wee hours of the morning catching people up on the headlines of the day. Later in the morning, I move over to 3TV for Good Morning Arizona joining Scott Pasmore and Olivia Fierro.

I love being of service to people who have interest entering this field.  I am always willing to help people learn how to do the work, teaching them, answering their questions and, most of all, helping them get their first experiences on air or behind the scenes. So many people helped me in my journey, and I want to do the same!

What are you doing when you’re not working? When I’m not working I like to do absolutely nothing, when my two girls aren’t keeping me super busy. I have a pretty small, close-knit group of friends who I hang out with, when I’m not being a complete hermit. (You know who you are friends, thanks for being so understanding.)

You’ll also find me in Vegas. I lived in Vegas before moving to Phoenix and still consider Sin City home. I’m probably the only person you know who loves to visit VEGAS to chill and relax. Believe it or not, the city is great in that way too!

I’m always listening to music, and have always been a music lover. There are only a few genres of music I don’t like, but I love all the tunes. Play me some music and I will get the whole room in a good mood!

You might also find me in Sephora or Ulta, my second and third homes when I’m not on set.  Makeup is my guilty pleasure. I spend a lot of time buying it, researching it, learning it, attending conventions about it and observing others who are masters at it like Kim Kardashian and Mario Dedivanovic, (don’t @ me).

How can people get in touch? The best way to contact me is through email at I enjoy hearing unique ‘people’ stories. I feel there are so many great stories out there to share that we don’t know about, and I would like to find them and tell them! You can follow me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook at @yettagibson.
