How are influencers adjusting content amid COVID-19?
As I have been social distancing and staying home, I’ve found myself keeping more up-to-date with Instagram stories than ever before. As I flip through each day’s stories, I’ve noticed that the content has become more real and raw – especially from some of my favorite influencers.
While some social media influencers pride themselves on giving followers an inside look into their personal lives, we all know that can only be true to a degree. Everyone has parts of their life they want to keep to themselves, and social media is typically home to carefully crafted content and staged photos layered with filters.
As everyone is adjusting to their new routines as we navigate COVID-19, I have noticed that influencers are changing up their content to reflect the reality of their social distancing situations. Influencers like my cousin – professional ballerina, wellness advocate and yogi @healthy_ballerina – have swapped out their typical wardrobes for tie-dyed sweat sets and messy buns, in addition to showing off what a regular day looks like amid following stay-at-home orders. Now more than ever, content is showcasing the unfiltered version of a day in the life and focusing more on building the personal relationship between the follower and the influencer.
For travel, lifestyle and food influencers, creating content is a bit more challenging as travel, social gatherings and dining in restaurants are all temporarily unavailable. Although creating content requires more imagination at this time, now is a great opportunity to continue engaging with audiences online as people are giving social media their undivided attention.
