(PHOENIX – Dec. 1, 2021) One Step Beyond, Inc. (OSBI) today announced the One Step Coyotes—the Valley area’s only adaptive hockey program for adults who have intellectual disabilities—has begun the 2021-2022 hockey season. Since the inception of the program in 2017, the program has grown to more than 70 participant hockey players and the organization is looking for volunteers who would like to offer a helping hand.
The One Step Coyotes practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at AZ Ice Peoria. The 2021/2022 season runs through February 24. Individuals interested in volunteering should contact One Step Beyond Director of Special Programs Jared Woosley at JaredWoosley@osbi.org.
“We’re looking for individuals who want to help our participants have fun and build skills that can transfer into a participant’s everyday life,” says Woosley. “Our hockey program promotes ability and inclusion and offers a safe place for participants to socialize and be independent. It’s simply the best program the Valley area has to offer individuals who have Autism, Down Syndrome or traumatic brain injury.”
One Step Beyond’s one-of-a-kind educational, recreational, employment, and life skills programming enables participants to achieve independence, self-sufficiency and employment that enables participants to contribute to and achieve greater social participation in their communities.
Added Woosley, “Thanks to American Special Hockey (ASHA), support from the Arizona Coyotes, equipment donations from the community and wheelchairs from Southwest Lending Closet, we’ve never had to turn anyone away. We offer access to opportunities that some of us take for granted.”
Individuals unable to volunteer but who are interested in supporting the One Step Coyotes can make a monetary donation by visiting the One Step Beyond website at https://osbi.org/hug/.
